Psychologist Salary

A counseling psychologist provides a very useful service, helping people through the difficult times that face everyone in a lifetime. This is a rapidly growing field that is expected to continue growing for years to come. People in today’s world need help dealing with all the stress that comes from the many issues that they face.

To get a license, either an online Masters Degree Program in counseling or a Doctoral Degree in psychology is required. Which one you choose will depend on what areas you are interested in working in. Those holding a Master’s Degree can choose a variety of options, while Doctorates are usually needed for private practices.

You will also need a Bachelor’s Degree in counseling or psychology. Make sure you choose an APA (American Psychological Association) accredited school and internship (also mandatory), so you can easily get a license upon graduation.

Some of the classes for a degree that you will need to take include Psychology Assessment and Theories, Research Methods, and Career Psychology. Doing independent research and as many internships as possible will give your career a boost later.

Job Description

Everyone has problems, but some people are less able to handle them than others. As a counselor with an online degree, you will be helping people learn to cope with life’s problems, both big and small. Treatments may be quite simple and short term, or they may take longer to implement and often require carefully planned out sessions.

Areas that you may work in include addictions, marital problems, family and job issues, and a number of other stress-inducing situations.

In order to be successful in this line of work, you will need to be good with people, a good listener, and have compassion and good communication skills. You should also be mentally stable yourself.

Who is Hiring...

You have several options when it comes to finding a place to work. Those who already have plenty of experience often open up their own private practice, but for those just starting out, there are other options.

Community health centers, rehab centers, schools and universities, and businesses all hire counselors to work for them. You could be working with young children, business men, or even war veterans. There is no shortage of options, making this an interesting career choice.

In order to advance in your career, you will need to take ongoing classes provided by the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs (CCPTP). The more experience you have, the more likely you will get advancement opportunities, as well.
